Remember this date. It’s the latest in a trend of seven consecutive quarters where Google had to announce a decline in revenue from their Display Network.

The war on third-party cookies is hitting Google where it counts, and they are passing the buck on to their struggling customers to try and make up the revenue gap.

How so?

By pushing products like Performance Max onto their unsuspecting customers to obscure results and reduce control, passing “hands-free advertising” off as the next evolution in ads.

It’s not evolutionary or revolutionary. It’s preying on unsuspecting small businesses.

At the same time, smart advertisers are allocating their money elsewhere and just saying no to Google’s weak attempt to hoodwink them into spending more and getting less. That’s why the revenue continues to decline.

Navigating this minefield represents the biggest opportunity for marketing agencies to grow revenue and profits, all with the satisfaction of helping your clients get the results they need to keep their business healthy.

Well, if you look at Google’s Q3 2023 financial report, it’s easy to read between the lines.

But let me save you all that trouble. I’ll do it for you…

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, grew revenue by 11% year over year, and a large part of that growth came from ads (and by cutting headcount).

But let’s take a closer look at Google’s financial statements…

You can see that Search Ads drove most of their ads revenue increase… almost $5 billion in Q3 alone!

But YouTube ads barely grew, and the Display Network lost revenue again. The seventh consecutive quarter of revenue decline for the Google Network.

Google saw this coming and announced Performance Max campaigns in late 2021 to stop the bleeding.

In case you didn’t know, Performance Max is a “black box” type of campaign where you can run ads everywhere Google allows them within a single campaign, but you have limited control over where your ads show up.

It’s part of Google’s agenda to “blend” bad performers with the good ones.

While this move is good for Google’s shareholders, it’s NOT good for your clients.

So, how can you create profitable ad campaigns for your clients while beating Google at its own game?

First, we need to understand that we are now moving into an Efficiency Economy as opposed to the Growth Economy we experienced from roughly 2010-2021 when money was “cheap”.

And it will likely stay this way for several years.

Now let me be clear. I am not saying we’re in a recession.

I’m saying that a mindset shift has happened once money got more “expensive.” Case in point, large companies that overinvested in growth between 2010 and 2021 have had to make cuts lately. For a decade, it was Growth, Growth, Growth… at all costs.

Then, when money started to get more expensive in 2022, the math was just not adding up to their bottom line.

This macroeconomic change has forced most companies to shift gears toward efficiency and profit (hence the tech layoffs and Google’s headcount reduction).

This pull-back has had an outsized impact on small businesses, entrepreneurs, creators, and marketing agencies (which make up 99.9% of businesses in the United States).

Here’s the thing, though…

We’ve seen the same movie before.
